Aloft... short range model solutions through 00z sun are reasonably similar. Upper ridge from the Chukchi Sea southeastward to the eastern Brooks range will become gradually reoriented to lie from chukotka eastward across the Brooks range by 00z sun. Weakly cyclonic east to northeast flow will continue over the central and southern interior. In the medium range...GFS and European model (ecmwf) coming more into line with indication of winter intensity upper low moving into the Arctic Ocean northwest of Barrow by 12z Wednesday. Below freezing air at 850 mb expected to arrive along the central and western Arctic coast by 12z Monday...spreading to much of the West Coast...most of the Brooks range and Arctic coast by 12z Wednesday. Over the central and western Arctic coast...850 mb temperatures could fall to as low as -6c to -10c by 12z Wednesday. Surface... a dry east to northeast wind flow will persist through the weekend over the central/northern interior and Brooks range...between high pressure over the Arctic region and broad low pressure south of the forecast area. Model forecasts of Small Craft Advisory winds over pkz225-pkz230 look a bit heavy- handed...current 6 hour forecasts from the NAM and GFS are certainly off the mark in these areas. Will opt for winds 20 knots or less. In the medium range...1000-850 mb layer mean temperatures will fall to below 0c over the central and western Arctic coast by 12z Monday. This colder air expected to spread over all of the Arctic zones...Brooks range...northern parts of the West Coast and northwest interior by 12z Tuesday. Any precipitation occurring in these areas during this time frame will almost certainly be snow.
