NWS Forecaster Discussion
595 fxus62 kjax 200145 afdjax Area forecast discussion National Weather Service Jacksonville Florida 845 PM EST Wednesday Nov 19 2008 Update...cold high pressure has settled over the area and winds are calm except for the beaches and near the St. Johns River. A northwesterly mean 1000-500mb flow is pushing the marine stratocu farther away from the area. With clear skies and calm winds...temperatures that are currently in the middle/upper 30s inland will drop to freezing around 11pm to midnight. Observation at Mayport and jax NAS indicate a light breeze continues at the beaches and along the river where temperatures remain in the middle 40s. Afternoon highs were in the 50s and although colder than normal everywhere St Simons Island is only area that recorded a record low maximum temperature of 50. The previous record low maximum was 53 in 1951...also the same year several other record low were set. Record lows are possible again tonight at gnv and jax with freeze conditions everywhere except the southeast portion. Instead of wind chills being a factor tonight...light or no winds will allow areas of frost to form even in places where the temperature barely reaches or remains just above freezing. Thus a frost advisory is necessary for St Johns and Flagler cos since temperatures are not anticipated to hit freezing for 2 or more hours. Record for November 20th... jax 30/1873 gnv 30/1968 amg 26/1951 ssi 33/1951 && Aviation... clear skies and unlimited visibilities will continue through Thursday. && Marine... winds continue to decrease...now down to 10 knots or less. Buoy 41012 is still reporting 6 feet seas. Will wait until 11 PM to expire Small Craft Advisory for offshore segment amz474 as seas are expected to subside to 5 feet or less by that time. Will also remove scec wording over the nearshore zones where seas have subsided to 3 to 4 feet. && Fire weather... all red flag warnings verified across northeast Florida today. A red flag warning is in effect again Thursday afternoon for all of NE Florida. && Preliminary point temps/pops... amg 54 28 65 33 / 0 0 0 0 ssi 51 38 64 42 / 0 0 0 0 jax 54 29 67 40 / 0 0 0 0 sgj 55 36 67 44 / 0 0 0 0 gnv 57 27 67 38 / 0 0 0 0 ocf 58 29 67 40 / 0 0 0 0 && Jax watches/warnings/advisories...
