Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service North Platte NE
355 am CST Friday Nov 21 2008

Discussion...
south winds have been slow to kick in...while low clouds have
remained along the Front Range...which has resulted in temperatures
dropping to the coldest of the season...especially across
central/eastern Nebraska where a few single digits have been
reported. Temperatures for the most part are bottoming out with a few
locations up a degree from last hour as winds have picked up.

Center of elongated surface high runs from southern Minnesota to northern Texas...and
high is drifting to the southeast. Meanwhile a Lee side trough is
developing and will strengthen during the day. The close
proximity of the deepening low pressure to the west and the
departing strong high in the east...will cause increasing winds
across central Nebraska today. Guidance is in good agreement as
winds increase briefly to around 20 kts early in the afternoon.
Across western Nebraska...winds not as strong...closer to 10 to
15 kts.

Next short wave already crossing the northern rockies and will
slide across the Dakotas later today/tonight...into the central
miss River Valley by Saturday morning. Arctic high dried the
atmosphere out substantially and will take some time to saturate.
Plenty of middle/high moisture seen on water vapor imagery headed
this way...however bl is very dry. Bl will be slow to saturate as
surface dew points in the teens all the way into North Texas...and models
continue to keep majority of the lift along and north of the S
Dakota/Nebraska border. Will continue to mention S chance of snow near
the border...however am expected most of the area to see virga or
flurries.

Northwest flow continues this weekend as ridge builds across the
western states. Next cold front to push through the plains Sunday.
Still dry bl and expect an increase in clouds along with cooler
temperatures. Then ridge migrates east over the southern/Central Plains.
This continues a dry forecast and a rise to above seasonal
temperatures.

Aviation...
a fast moving system will drop out of northwest flow across the
Dakotas today affecting northern Nebraska late this afternoon and
tonight. Limited low level moisture will bring mainly middle and high
cloudiness to western and north central Nebraska with the
possibility of light precipitation chances along the Nebraska
South Dakota border tonight. Both NAM and GFS close 500 mb. Good
forcing at middle levels...enough to warrant precipitation group for kvtn
this evening.

Lbf watches/warnings/advisories...none.
