NWS Forecaster Discussion
903 fxus64 kmaf 210458 afdmaf Area forecast discussion National Weather Service Midland/Odessa Texas 1058 PM CST Thursday Nov 20 2008 Discussion... see 06z discussion below. && Aviation... biggest concern with overnight issuance remains low-level clouds. Latest 11-3.9u imagery showing low-level cloud development across much of the Pecos River valley...with additional development further east across portions of the big County. As evening cooling wares on...main concern is potential for low-level cloud fill-in across the Permian Basin. 00z kmaf sounding shows a pronounced frontal inversion located near h80...thus feel ceilings should be confined near or slightly above this layer. Latest observation from kink/kfst/kcnm indicate broken ceilings near 5kft...which supports this reasoning. Best moisture pooling from pronounced northeasterly flow all afternoon will remain confined to the west...thus have only made a sct040 mention for now at eastern terminals through the early morning hours. Another concern is low-level wind shear as latest kmaf vwp continues to indicate 40kt winds roughly 4kft above the surface. In spite of this have decided to maintain low level wind shear mention for the next couple of hours after which...the middle-level vorticity maximum responsible for the higher winds will have passed off to the east. Otherwise...gradual veering of winds expected through the afternoon tomorrow before coming southerly by the conclusion of the forecast period. && Maf watches/warnings/advisories... nm...none. Texas...High Wind Warning until 1 am MST Friday for the following zones... Guadalupe Mountains. && $$ 32
