Synopsis For Keys Coastal Waters From Ocean Reef To Dry Tortugas
Synopsis
At 500 PM EDT...the center of Hurricane Gustav was located over the northwestern Caribbean Sea between Jamaica and the Cayman Islands...about 340 nautical miles south-southeast of Key West Florida. Gustav is moving toward the northwest near 10 knots. Hurricane Gustav is expected to intensify over the warm Caribbean waters tonight. The system is forecast to move northwestward across the western tip of Cuba late Saturday...and over the south-central Gulf of Mexico on Sunday. Northeast to east breezes will freshen over Keys coastal waters tonight through Saturday...with tropical storm conditions possible from the west end of the Seven Mile Bridge to the Dry Tortugas out 60 nautical miles. Winds and seas should then subside Sunday through early next week as Gustav pulls away from the area.

Northeast to east winds near 20 knots. Seas beyond the reef building to 4 to 7 feet...except higher in the Gulf Stream. Seas inside the reef 2 to 3 feet. Nearshore waters rough. Numerous showers and scattered thunderstorms.
Saturday
Tropical storm conditions possible. East winds increasing to 25 to 30 knots and gusty. Seas beyond the reef building to 7 to 10 feet...except higher in the Gulf Stream. Seas inside the reef building to 3 to 5 feet. Nearshore waters becoming extremely rough. Scattered showers and thunderstorms...followed by periods of heavy rain...numerous squalls...and scattered thunderstorms.
Saturday Night
Tropical storm conditions possible. East to southeast winds increasing to near 30 knots and gusty. Seas beyond the reef building to 7 to 11 feet. Seas inside the reef building to 4 to 6 feet. Nearshore waters extremely rough. Periods of heavy rain...numerous squalls...and scattered thunderstorms.
Sunday
Tropical storm conditions possible early. Southeast winds near 30 knots and gusty early...decreasing to near 20 knots late. Seas beyond the reef 7 to 10 feet...subsiding late. Seas inside the reef 3 to 5 feet...subsiding late. Nearshore waters extremely rough early...becoming rough late. Scattered showers and thunderstorms.
Sunday Night Through Monday
East to southeast winds decreasing to 10 to 15 knots. Seas beyond the reef subsiding to 2 to 4 feet. Seas inside the reef subsiding to 1 to 2 feet. Nearshore waters becoming a light to moderate chop. Scattered showers and thunderstorms.
Tuesday And Wednesday
East winds 10 to 15 knots. Seas beyond the reef 2 to 4 feet...except higher in the Gulf Stream. Seas inside the reef 1 to 2 feet. Nearshore waters a light to moderate chop. Scattered showers and thunderstorms.

... Tropical storm watch in effect for the Lower Keys west of Seven
Mile Bridge through Dry Tortugas...

... Areas affected...

This statement details specific preparedness and safety actions to
be taken in the Florida Keys of Monroe County concerning the effects
of Hurricane Gustav.

... Watches/warnings...

A tropical storm watch is in effect for the lower Florida
Keys... from the west end of the Seven Mile Bridge through Key West
and to Dry Tortugas. A tropical storm watch means that tropical
storm conditions... including sustained winds of 39 to 73 mph... are
possible within the watch area within the next 36 hours.

... Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Monroe County emergency management is monitoring Hurricane Gustav.
However... no preparedness actions are recommended at this time. There
are no evacuation orders for any part of the Florida Keys. There are
no weather-related bridge closures... and the drawbridges at Jewfish
Creek and Snake Creek will continue to open for marine traffic.

... Storm surge and storm tide...

No storm surge is expected throughout the Florida Keys at this time.

At Vaca Cut in Marathon...

East winds will increase to near 20 mph with higher gusts Saturday.
Tropical storm force winds will be possible Saturday night across
the Lower Keys... west of the Seven Mile Bridge.

... Probability of hurricane/tropical storm conditions...

For Key West... there is a 50 percent chance of sustained winds 39 mph or
greater. There is a 4 percent chance of sustained winds 74 mph or greater.

For Marathon... there is a 33 percent chance of sustained winds 39 mph or
greater. There is a 1 percent chance of sustained winds 74 mph or greater.

For Miami... there is a 14 percent chance of sustained winds 39 mph or
greater.

... Rainfall impacts...

Rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches are possible across the Florida
Keys Saturday through Sunday... with the heaviest amounts likely
across the Lower Keys.

... Marine impacts...

A Small Craft Advisory will likely be required late tonght. East
winds will increase to 20 knots Saturday throughout all Keys coastal
waters. Saturday night... over Atlantic waters west of the Seven Mile
Bridge through Dry Tortugas... winds will become southeast and
increase to near 30 knots with numerous squalls... and tropical storm
force winds possible. Seas will build to 7 to 10 feet over Atlantic
waters west of Seven Mile Bridge.
